About the role
Onyx is an open source project with over 10K stars and over 3K community members across Slack and Discord. This Founding Forward Deployed Engineer role enables broader organizational adoption by providing technical expertise to teams lacking deployment knowledge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as primary technical advisor to the expanding customer base
- Guide customers through self-hosted deployments across AWS, GCP, and Azure using various methods
- Troubleshoot deployment-specific issues
- Enhance open source community through documentation and deployment improvements
- Contribute features addressing common setup challenges
- Identify optimal use cases and maximize customer value
- Bridge customer feedback to product leadership and shape product direction
Required Qualifications:
- Strong proficiency with Docker/Kubernetes, cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure), and on-prem/cloud deployments
- Prior experience as Deployed Engineer, Customer Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or DevOps
- Excellent communication abilities and capacity to explain technical concepts accessibly
- Experience in fast-moving startups without established processes
Preferred Qualifications:
- Self-hosting software deployment experience with customers
- Technical writing and documentation expertise
- Familiarity with Typescript, React, NextJS, Python, PostgreSQL, Vespa, or Elasticsearch
